Dolphin Research: Link to The Dolphin Institute. My Ph.D. was completed here at the University of Hawaii at Manoa on a pattern matching problem relating to photographs from our whale research. My MA was on spontaneous categorization of objects in a language-trained dolphin. See us on the new BBC special with David Attenborough as host, it has already shown in the UK, and will probably show late 2003 in the US on the Discovery Channel, see a short clip here. I've presented a few talks at IMATA as well in recent years. See the professional site link above for full details. Currently I sometimes do aerial marine mammal surveys with MMRC and spinner dolphin field work out of Ko'Olina with TDI.
Update: IMATA Soundings feature article "How to Develop Abstract Concepts and Understanding of Complex Relationships in Dolphins", in Vol 30 #3 (3rd Quarter 2005). All about training dolphins for cognition research, aka "how to use animal training techniques to create cases where behavior cannot be explained by operant conditioning alone." If you're a trainer, that may sound fundamentally impossible. (Full text HTML).
Family:
Uyeyama.org Another of my new domains, this will serve as the Uyeyama Family site, including links as well as downloadable photo album from the first half of the century, and I may enable mail account redirects, if that interests anyone, although I think it is unlikely I'll receive the request. Currently there is only a test splash page with some family album photos from the early 20th century, including the San Francisco Exhibition.
Update 12/2004: added more of the album, as well as a preliminary (incomplete!) family tree.
